Stick to it, Windows

Tonight at midnight, I will walk to the 34th Street Loews (in the damn rain, AGAIN) to see the prequel to The Thing, my favorite movie of all time. I’m a little nervous.

Not because it’s currently rocking a 37% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 43 on Metacritic. I haven’t read the reviews but the original wasn’t terribly well received at first so a lack of critical appreciation doesn’t worry me. (If you need a refresher on the broad strokes of the first one, the video above is pretty fun. If you haven’t seen the original yet, well, wow. You should really take care of that.)

I’m nervous because there’s nowhere to go but down. The first movie had flaws, but was in its own weird way absolutely perfect. It’s completely likely the new movie will be a disaster, lacking new ideas and loaded with cheesy winks at memorable lines and moments from the first one. This may be my one and only chance, for as long as I live, to see a new chapter of my favorite horror story on the big screen. After what George Lucas did to Star Wars, I’m very nervous indeed.
