The Conjuring (2013)

Posted in news with tags , on October 31, 2013 by adam

Happy Halloween, everybody!

I hope you’ve had an awesome October and you’re getting ready for a party or a parade tonight. Or perhaps you’re getting the little ones dressed up to go trick-or-treating, assuming your town actually does that on Halloween rather than the week before. Can you imagine if local governments tried to pull that shit with the Fourth of July, relegating all firework displays to the Thursday before the holiday? There would be chaos in the streets. It’s fine to fuck around with Halloween but ‘Merica would not stand idly by while its patriotism was rescheduled. This is clearly part of the religious right’s crusade against Halloween. I will not stand for your anti-Samhainism, Michele Bachmann.

Unlucky 2013

Posted in news on October 1, 2013 by adam

rex goonHappy October 1st!

The greatest month known to man has begun and for me this is cause for much celebration. Sadly, for the first time in four years, I won’t be ringing in the Halloween season with a thematically appropriate movie marathon. I just have too many irons on my plate (?) this year to count down (and write up) 31 scary movies. You’d be surprised how long it takes to get those posts down to single digit typos.

I’ll still watch more than my share of weird shit this month but I wouldn’t be able to maintain the intense pace the full 31 requires. My new job is pretty time intensive and I’m embarking on a few new side projects to boot. Then there’s the whole new dad thing. Fatherhood is awesome but it turns out I can’t stand to do anything but hang out with my kid during the two precious hours a day I’m not working or sleeping. Watching straight-to-DVD horror titles doesn’t really rate.

Interestingly and not unrelatedly, I’ve noticed a serious shift in my movie tastes. I recently read the review for Hatchet I wrote five or six years ago. That kid – gleefully extolling the blood soaked carnage and “creative kills” – is basically a stranger to who I am now. It’s not so much that I’ve gone squeamish. As I said last year, having a baby is not for the faint of heart. I just don’t find as much value in ever more convincing ways to eviscerate actors in high definition. I appreciate the artistry and hard work great effects require but extreme violence for its own sake doesn’t really rev me up the way it used to. Luckily slasher flicks and torture porn aren’t the only games in town and I’ll always be keen on the spooky, the monstrous, the utterly inexplicable.

So I’ll still be enjoying this month on my own, scaring the heck outta myself in a darkened room. You’ll just have to imagine the part where I write about it the next day and say fuck too much. Do me a favor and imagine I’m being really clever, okay?

PS – My buddy Rob gave my daughter a copy of Goodnight Goon. It’s the bee’s knees. If you have kids and you’re considering traversing October without this book, well, you know, don’t.

There’s a Harvest Moon on the Rise….

Posted in news on September 30, 2012 by adam

Welcome back to fall, minions!

October begins in less than four hours and I’m having a hard time containing my excitement. In the span of a week the weather has gone from Jurassic humidity to temperatures in which I can safely wear jeans without producing three gallons of rank ball sweat. Coincidentally, the fall harvest moon is in the sky tonight, telling farming conglomerates it’s time to bash their mutant chickens against the wall or whatever. The leaves are turning beautiful colors. (Not in New York. Our leaves fall in their greenest prime and die penniless in the gutter.) Supermarkets are selling mini pumpkins and decorative squashes and other things that demand immediate and vigorous shellacking. The replacement refs are gone and football is fun to watch again. The cool breeze wafting through my apartment has me fully engorged. I’m gonna run a train on some popcorn in like 200 minutes. Dear god, I love this month. Continue reading

Only 5% Chance We Have Not Found Yeti, Report Idiots Who Do Not Understand Percentages

Posted in news with tags on October 13, 2011 by adam

Russian researchers looking for the yeti — the Asian version of the North American Bigfoot — claim to have found “indisputable proof” of the long-sought mystery beast in Siberia.

There isn’t a ton of evidence to work with — just a few strands of hair and some tracks in the snow — but it’s enough that the research team says its 95 percent sure that the yeti exists. Others, however, are mighty skeptical of the findings.

Also, there is a 95% chance that legitimate researchers would never bother to leave a camera in the supposed den of these yetis.

Stick to it, Windows

Netflix Makes It Right

Posted in news on October 11, 2011 by adam

This is a few days old but Netflix did the right thing over the weekend, announcing it would scrap plans to split up its DVD and streaming services. From

The company, which will keep a recent 60 percent price increase in place, declared that it had moved too fast when it tried to spin-off the old-fashioned DVD service into a new company called Qwikster, angering many subscribers. “We underestimated the appeal of the single Web site and a single service,” Steve Swasey, a Netflix spokesman, said in an interview, before quickly adding: “We greatly underestimated it.”

Dead Set

Posted in news with tags on October 28, 2010 by adam

Listen kids, it’s way past my bed time and I’ve been drinking but I need to alert you to this right now because your window to DVR it is really fucking narrow. There is an incredible British zombie dramedy on IFC called Dead Set that you need to watch right now. It’s a grand total of five 45-minute episodes airing between now and Halloween. Here’s the website.

Here’s the thing, when the zombie apocalypse happens (and it will) there are bound to be a few dozen assholes in the process of filming reality TV. In this case, we’re following the UK cast of Big Brother when the zombie plague hits.

It’s funny, it’s smart, it’s scary, it’s awesome. Watch it and your life will be better. Adam out.

Please give this seat to the living dead

Posted in news on October 26, 2010 by adam

Just like a zombie to get at you when you’re most vulnerable: the morning commute. From AP:

As if the morning commute weren’t odd enough, intrepid New Yorkers trying to make their way to work had to battle past hordes of the walking dead.

Two dozen zombies, their clothes spattered with fake blood, were staggering up and down the block Tuesday outside Madison Square Garden.

Yup it seems the undead horde was out in force today, plugging AMC’s upcoming series, The Walking Dead. I’ve been extremely psyched about this show’s Halloween premiere since I heard about it a few months ago. Given the incredible graphic novel upon which it’s based and AMC’s recent track record of excellent television, I’m anticipating something truly special. So if you don’t have plans on Halloween around 10, you should definitely check it out. And if you watch, be sure to stop by the 31 Flavors during the show…
