TV: The Walking Dead 2.3

Posted in TV with tags on October 30, 2011 by adam

Three scary TV shows are premiering this month:
Bedlam (Saturdays on BBC America starting 10/1), American Horror Story (Wednesdays on FX starting 10/5) and season two of The Walking Dead (Sundays on AMC starting 10/16). Every week I’ll post recaps shortly after each new episode airs. They’ll be a little different than my movie posts. I’m assuming anyone who’s reading the recap has already seen the episode or isn’t planning to watch. That is to say, *SPOILERS AHEAD.*

Episode three starts with Shane in the bathroom, taking advantage of Hershel’s generator to take a hot shower and shave his head with a set of electric clippers – the quintessential act of contrition. So we know from the start Shane made it back from his trip to get Carl’s medical supplies, but why is he looking so intently at himself in the mirror? Continue reading

The penultimate Bedlam shockingly begins with yet another random, one-off character. Hi, Mark! So nice to meet you! This time they don’t even bother establishing his relationship with the flatmates, they just introduce him as Jed’s friend even though they’ve apparently only just met. I guess that’s cheap but I’m too grateful for the expedience to care. Continue reading

So, who’s gonna die this week? The caption says 2010 and that can mean only one thing: the gays! It’s Zachary Quinto as Chad and some buff dude who vaguely resembles Eric Northman. Their relationship is on the rocks because musclehead Patrick is banging his “twink trainer” at the gym and Chad is obsessed with selling the house via some convoluted scheme involving the perfect Halloween party and Marie Antoinette. They touch on pretty much every gay stereotype you can imagine before the rubber man shows up and kills them both. Yowch! Continue reading

After a solid start we kick of the second episode of season two with a little flashback action, as Lori waits for Carl outside his school. She talks with another mom about how she maybe doesn’t love Rick anymore, but her timing stinks. This is the moment Shane comes speeding down the road to inform her of Rick’s shooting. The two of them have a nice little scene and it’s good to see Shane before he was a skeevy home wrecker.

The fourth installment of Bedlam arrives with the question, “Which new character will we be asked to care about and then never see again after this episode?” The answer: whiny brat Ella! She has an imaginary friend and in horror stories that’s never a good idea. Alice is of course not imaginary, just dead. She gives Ella a doll. That’s nice. Then she turns around and gives us the demon eyes. Not so nice. Her voice is completely unaltered but even so her shrill “Ellaaaaaa, come and play” is pretty creepy. Continue reading

This week’s opening murder takes place in 1983, when the house was occupied by a drunken Camaro salesman. He aggressively pursues Hot Moira, who uncharacteristically spurns his advances. He won’t take no for an answer. Just as his attempted rape gets going, in busts a young Connie carrying a revolver. Her first shot goes through poor Moira’s eye, killing her and explaining why old, ghosty Moira rocks that spooky glass one. Connie tells her husband he’s broken her heart for the last time and empties the gun into his faithless chest. This makes her sad. Continue reading

Welcome back to lovely Bedlam Heights: luxury living for a diverse population of both the living and the dead. This week’s installment begins with our latest disposable character, Sadie, a pretty artist whose well-stocked medicine cabinet hints at a history of institutionalization. It should come as no surprise that this history will be the catalyst for the supernatural meddling of whatever ghostie has targeted her. I wonder if Jed will swoop in just in the nick of time to save the day. Sadie’s particular harassment at first takes the form of an empty shoebox in the hallway, which she ignores. Hey, if you see something, say something! Continue reading
