Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos) (2011)

Posted in movies with tags , , on October 29, 2012 by adam

Juan of the Dead arrived with the first batch of 31FoT-eligible DVDs I got from Netflix this month. It’s been sitting in a drawer for four weeks because the missus and I have been trying to coordinate a movie night with our neighbors, who are incidentally way too fucking cool for us. They do stuff like produce documentaries and paint murals when they get bored. When we get bored we watch Glee. They’re both bilingual in English and Spanish (Of course they are.) so I thought maybe they’d dig a Spanish language movie. Also I was hoping to find out just how hard the global subtitle conspiracy is fucking over unwitting American audiences. Continue reading

The Dead (2010)

Posted in movies with tags on October 24, 2012 by adam

A few weeks ago I said Dead [noun] was the most generic possible name for a zombie movie. I stand corrected. Hats off to The Dead for coming within one three-letter word of whittling its title down to irreducible, subatomic simplicity. So close!

My greatest hope for movies with common names like The Dead is that somewhere in the American midwest, some confused retiree was super excited for a night of box wine and John Huston movies, but instead wound up watching flesh-eating tribesmen getting decapitated. My stars, I never knew James Joyce was so violent!

Dead Season (2011)

Posted in movies with tags on October 7, 2012 by adam

I’ve gone through a full week of October without a single zombie movie and that just cannot stand. I was this close to giving you Juan of the Dead today but I’ve done several comedies already. Instead I opted for one that plays it straight. I should have known better.

There is no more generic zombie film naming convention than Dead [noun]. You can put literally anything in there and imagine a plot around it. For example:

Dead Tree – Once you’ve tasted its fruit, you’ll keep coming back for more.

Dead Floor – For the privileged residents of this high-rise, nothing is off limits. Except the penthouse.

Dead Party – Put out the best silver, the guests are hungry.

This is not difficult. So it’s a complete mystery when producers slap together meaningless names like Dead Season. The title is two words long and fully 50% of it has NOTHING to do with the story.

Quarantine 2: Terminal (2011)

Posted in movies with tags on October 26, 2011 by adam

Ready to have your mind blown? Zombie movies…are dead. I know, my provocative genius frightens me sometimes, too.

I’ll never stop loving zombie movies, even lousy ones. But the sad fact is that the current explosion in the popularity of zombies and the attendant resurgence of quality zombie movies are both winding down.

I trace this most recent trend to 2004, when both the remake of Dawn of the Dead and Shaun of the Dead came out. Both movies were outstanding and, more importantly, financially successful. Together they revitalized a genre that had been ignored by Hollywood for years. [EDIT: A few days after I posted this I had the chance to talk with io9’s Annalee Newitz, who reminded me that 28 Days Later came out before either of these movies. I was sure it was later but she was totally right. It hit the U.K. in late 2002 and got its wide release in the U.S. in June 2003. But I realize now that neither of us remembered Resident Evil, which came out in March 2002, well before 28 Days. That’s what I get for skimping on the research.]

Of course, even before studios started once again throwing wads of cash at zombie features, they were still being made at a prodigious rate. In 2003, even before Dawn and Shaun, there were no less than 27 zombie movies big enough to merit IMDB pages. The successes of 2004 drove that number up every year until 2010, which saw more than 60. But in 2011? Just 18, almost none of which had a prayer of securing a theatrical release.

TV: The Walking Dead 2.2

Posted in TV with tags on October 24, 2011 by adam

Three scary TV shows are premiering this month: Bedlam (Saturdays on BBC America starting 10/1), American Horror Story (Wednesdays on FX starting 10/5) and season two of The Walking Dead (Sundays on AMC starting 10/16). Every week I’ll post recaps shortly after each new episode airs. They’ll be a little different than my movie posts. I’m assuming anyone who’s reading the recap has already seen the episode or isn’t planning to watch. That is to say, *SPOILERS AHEAD.*

After a solid start we kick of the second episode of season two with a little flashback action, as Lori waits for Carl outside his school. She talks with another mom about how she maybe doesn’t love Rick anymore, but her timing stinks. This is the moment Shane comes speeding down the road to inform her of Rick’s shooting. The two of them have a nice little scene and it’s good to see Shane before he was a skeevy home wrecker.

TV: The Walking Dead 2.1

Season two of The Walking Dead kicks off with Rick narrating the major points of the first season over the walkie-talkie to Morgan, who most likely isn’t listening. Rick’s Aussie imitation of a southern accent has not improved. He says the CDC guy told him something, but he stops short of saying what it was. I read somewhere that they won’t hold that revelation over our heads for much longer, but honestly if it’s just that Lori is pregnar I’m gonna be seriously pissed. Continue reading
